Adoption of Gen-AI in Higher Education: An ETAM Analysis of Behavioral Intention at Muscat University

چکیده :

The rapid emergence of generative AI (Gen-AI) tools such as ChatGPT has important implications for teaching and learning in higher education. This study examines determinants of Muscat University students’ behavioral intention to use ChatGPT using an extended Technology Acceptance Model (ETAM). Survey data were collected from 80 postgraduate students and analyzed with PLS-SEM (5,000 bootstrap resamples). Core TAM relationships were strongly supported: Perceived Ease of Use → Perceived Usefulness (β = 0.700, p < 0.001) and → Attitude (β = 0.583, p < 0.001); Attitude → Behavioral Intention (β = 0.540, p < 0.001). Technical Knowledge positively influenced Perceived Ease of Use (β = 0.314, p < 0.01), while Security robustly predicted Trust (β = 0.571, p < 0.001) and Social Influence (β = 0.646, p < 0.001). Trust also had a significant direct effect on intention (β = 0.312, p < 0.01). Contrary to expectations, Privacy and Social Influence did not directly predict Behavioral Intention. The model explained 66.7% of variance in Attitude and 60.9% in Behavioral Intention. These findings suggest that enhancing students’ technical skills and instituting targeted training on ethical use of Gen-AI may facilitate responsible adoption. Contribution: provides early empirical ETAM evidence for Gen-AI adoption in the Omani higher-education context.
