Knowledge and Strategies for Online Classroom Management: TEFL Faculty Insights

چکیده :

This study investigates the strategies used by EFL teacher educators to manage challenges of online learning environments. The research gap concerning strategies used by English teacher educators to handle challenging situations in online settings is addressed. The study involved five experienced female EFL teacher educators from Iran University of Science and Technology. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a semi-structured interview was converted into a Google form questionnaire, consisting of 11 vignettes depicting challenging scenarios in online classrooms. Theme-based analysis was used to identify frequent responses and strategies used by the educators. Results indicated that teacher educators utilized a variety of strategies to address online classroom challenges, including detailed explanations, anticipating potential problems, and handling heavy workloads. Effective communication, engagement, and interactive materials were identified as crucial components for managing these challenges. The study concludes that teacher educators need to use interactive and communal strategies for communication issues, encouraging strategy use for instructional challenges, immediate solutions for e-content and technological issues, strict measures for behavioral issues, and better control and organization for managing heavy workloads. The findings suggest implications for improving instructors' competencies in online classroom management.
