Promoting Learner Engagement and Enhancing Willingness to Communicate: A Project-based VR-assisted Course

چکیده :
Encouraging higher levels of learner engagement in EAP courses, specifically in EFL contexts, has long been an educational concern. In addition, educators strive to boost willingness to communicate as an indicator of successful communication in various authentic situations. This qualitative case study was carried out to shed more light on the impact of a project-based VR-assisted academic oral presentation course on learner engagement and willingness to communicate. Four university lecturers participated in this course, comprised of 3 sessions of blended workshops and 4 sessions of VR practice through Alzahra VR Academy (1.0). A wealth of qualitative data, including pre- and post-course semi-structured interviews, audio-recorded class observations, and instructor field notes were analyzed. The findings revealed that the VR-assisted course had resulted in higher levels of learner engagement, and had brought about improvement in the participants’ willingness to communicate. This study has implications for EAP practitioners
