Using Generative Artificial Intelligence to Accelerate Teaching–Learning Processes in Architectural Design Studios

چکیده :
The emergence of generative artificial intelligence tools, including text-to-image systems, has significantly transformed higher education, particularly architectural education. International studies indicate that such technologies, by enabling rapid idea generation, providing instant feedback, and supporting personalized learning, can substantially accelerate core teaching–learning processes while expanding students’ access to analytical and creative resources. Nevertheless, concerns regarding academic misconduct, over-reliance on AI output, and the potential weakening of critical thinking skills highlight the need for clear educational and ethical frameworks. In architectural education, the design studio, structured around iterative cycles of ideation, critique sessions, feedback loops, and redesign, functions as the central pedagogical environment. Recent research demonstrates that the guided integration of generative AI can enhance the diversity and quality of design ideas, facilitate analytical tasks, and improve the efficiency of critique sessions. This paper provides a systematic review of the literature on AI in architectural education. It delineates four key roles of generative AI within the studio environment: (1) research and design studies, (2) conceptual development and ideation, (3) design representation and documentation, and (4) evaluation and juries. The paper concludes by outlining ethical and policy-related considerations as well as recommended directions for future research.
