Interactivity Variable in the Process of Online Gaming: The Scrutiny of Its Role in Learning English Vocabulary via Tech Platforms

چکیده :
In line with the Information Age, the current quantitative study was set to examine the impact of implementing interactive online-digital-gaming on EFL (English-as-a-Foreign-Language) learners’ vocabulary acquisition. To this end, 40 Iranian pre-intermediate EFL learners (age: 16-25), were selected based on convenience-sampling, and randomly classified into two equal groups of 20 (experimental and control), enrolled in a general English course at one language institute (Tehran, Iran). The experimental group learners played interactive-games (Apex-legends and Call-of-Duty) during their class time or at home while the control-group learned the instructional materials on the games description without practically playing them. The study lasted 10 weeks, 18 sessions each session one-and-a-half hour. The data were gathered through vocabulary pretest/posttest and analyzed via independent samples t-test. The findings showed that vocabulary knowledge performance had a positively significant effect (sig.=0.00). The study offered theoretical and pedagogical insights for EFL/ESL learners, teachers, curriculum designers, and policy makers.
