The Impact of AI-Assisted Writing on EFL Students’ Critical Thinking Skills

چکیده :
The present research aims to examine the effect of AI tools on EFL students’ critical thinking in writing. To this aim, this study followed a quasi-experimental design. Thirty-two EFL students were selected non-randomly and assigned to two groups, experimental and control. The materials were the Real 2 textbook and Google AI Studio. The California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI) was used as a pre- and post-test to assess learners’ tendency to engage in critical thinking. The Paul-Elder critical thinking rubric was utilized to evaluate post-intervention writing tasks. The Shapiro-Wilk test was computed to examine the normality of the data. The paired samples t-test and ANCOVA were run to identify the performance of two groups. The result of this study suggested that AI had no statistically significant impact on learners’ critical thinking in writing. The findings might affect teachers, students, material developers, and the educational system.
